Physical Education - PE
Intent
In line with the National Curriculum, it is our intent at St Clement’s CEP is to develop the children’s physical, cognitive and social skills through sport. We aim to deliver high quality, purposeful teaching and learning that inspires all children to excel in physical education.
Through our progressive curriculum, we strive to teach children to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of a team. We value an inclusive approach to PE, which endeavours to encourage not only physical development, but also mental wellbeing
Implementation
We follow a clear and comprehensive scheme of work, which ensures the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met through a progressive, skill- based programme. Each year group will practice developmentally appropriate skills through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.
Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week. The school uses The PE Hub planning to aid the teaching of PE across the school. Children take part in an additional hour of Forest School alongside a daily mile and planned activities at lunch and play. We have team theme support our teaching of PE and ensure our teachers have relevant curriculum knowledge and training through this. Our objective within lessons is to develop the children’s physical skill, cognitive thinking and social skills Throughout the year, pupils will have opportunities to develop their physical skills and will be taught to:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives.
In Early Years Foundation Stage children will learn to:
- negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others
- demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing
- move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing
In Key Stage 1 pupils are taught:
- master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
- participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
- perform dances using simple movement patterns.
In Key Stage 2 Pupils are taught:
- use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounder’s and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
- perform dances using a range of movement patterns
- take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
- compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
- to be sports ambassadors, leading sports activities for the rest of the school.
- to be safe in water.
Whole School:
- The school works in partnership with team theme to provide a wide range of sporting opportunities for all children.
- SEND children will be given the appropriate support and opportunities to achieve their potential in PE. Where appropriate, we work with outside agencies to support children.
- We encourage visits from local sports groups to motivate our children to join groups or teams in the community.
- During each day, brain breaks will support mental well-being and physical health for example The Daily Mile.
Extra-Curricular:
- Children will be given opportunities to take part in a range of extracurricular sports and take part in competitive sport, through both intra- and inter- school sport. Our team- theme and forest school provision also enables us to offer extra- curricular sports with a varying sport each term covered.
