Starfish Class - Year 1

Welcome to Starfish Class.

Miss Hobson, Mrs Friday, and Mrs Bofando teach Starfish class. Our class page provides information regarding all things Starfish!

We have enrichment topics each term that provide a cross-curricular link with all subjects across the curriculum. This is to help encourage excitement for learning. On the first day of term, we will have a launch pad event to introduce the topic. All information will be put on Dojo.

Phonics

Reading for pleasure is an important part of year 1 that we incorporate into our phonics learning. We teach phonics twice a week following the Read Write Inc scheme in preparation for the phonic screening in June. Children are grouped into small groups and take part in an hour-long session of phonics at 9am with an adult, they will learn a new sound whilst recapping previous sounds and reading real words and nonsense words. Phonics is then taught in the afternoon with the class teacher where they recap their prior learning. Your child will be taken out daily for a 5-minute intervention to help them retain the sounds and build on blending longer words.

Children are given two books to take home, their focused phonics book and a reading-for-pleasure book. Year 1 book changes are Monday, Wednesday and Friday and books should be read twice with an adult and signed in their reading record before being changed. To support at home your children can watch the phonics videos that are posted on dojo on a Friday afternoon, the videos are 5 minutes long and will recap the sounds that they have learned from the previous week. Daily reading is also very important for children to create reading for pleasure.

Maths

In year 1 we want to build the foundation of mathematics to help support children throughout their time in Primary School. To build on their number knowledge the children can watch number blocks at home this is an engaging and fun way to learn mathmatics.

A huge focus in Year 1 is learning our number bonds to build that foundation to support with addition and subtraction. Games like hit the button can be played at home to encourage learning number bonds to 10.
